Single-parent stem cells may skirt cloning controversy
Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine have derived uniparental embryonic stem cells--created from a single donor's eggs or two sperm--and, for the first time, successfully used them to repopulate a damaged organ with healthy cells in adult mice. Their findings demonstrate that single-parent stem cells can proliferate normally in an adult organ and could provide a less controversial alternative to the therapeutic cloning of embryonic stem …

For the first time in humans a doctor has extracted adult stem cells from fat tissue and injected them directly into the heart as a therapy for angina and heart disease. Physicians in Spain--working with investigators at the Texas Heart Institute in Houston--say that it will be at least six months before they can determine if the therapy is working. Another 35 volunteers suffering from chronic myocardial ischemia, a severe form of end-stage coronary artery disease, will be given the …

Researchers at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology have developed a heart muscle using embryonic stem cells. The work illustrates how new heart tissue could be developed to replace tissue damaged by a heart attack. Researchers have been working on finding ways to repair damaged hearts, and building replacement tissue may be the most effective approach. The scientists note that because the heart muscle is threaded with blood vessels, it would have a good chance of being …

Doctors in the UK are preparing to begin a study to see whether injecting stem cells harvested from a patient's bone marrow can repair the damage on heart muscle inflicted by a heart attack. The injections will be given within five hours of a heart attack, a critical period in the eyes of investigators. Doctors will recruit 100 patients for the procedure, which will also include angioplasty to clear blocked arteries--a standard therapy in these cases. Earlier studies have demonstrated …
