A key to controlling stress

A molecular mechanism at work during periods of stress may shed light on developing new therapies for post-traumatic stress disorder and other conditions. Researchers at UT Southwestern Medical Read more...

Molecule could reverse Parkinson's

Finnish researchers at the University of Helsinki say they have found and tested a new molecule that can help slow or reverse the symptoms of Parkinson's. The protein protects and repairs cells that Read more...

Statins could be linked to Parkinson's disease

A new study at the University of North Carolina indicates that statins could be linked to an increase risk of Parkinson's disease. Statins lower the level of 'bad' LDL cholesterols, which in turn was found among Parkinson's patients. Critics of the study have contended that with only 124 Parkinson's patients taking part, there wasn't enough data to confirm the link. And the researchers say they intend to test the results in a trial involving 16,000 patients. Parkinson's is characterized …

Stem cell transplant a success against Parkinson's

New research published in The Journal of Neuroscience asserts that transplanted neural stem cells can reduce the destruction of dopaminergic cells and replace cells lost to Parkinson's. A neural stem cell transplant in an animal study demonstrated that the animals continued to function normally, without the progressive loss of physical control that characterizes Parkinson's. The transplant occurred after a toxin was used to destroy neurons that are needed to make dopamine, a key …

Researchers narrow hunt for cure to stuttering

Researchers have been pursuing new leads in the search for a cure for stuttering. Scientists have found, for example, that stutterers often have an excess of dopamine, neurotransmitters, in the brain. And the fact that roughly half of stutterers who seek out treatment have a family member who also stutters raises the likelihood that there are genetic causes to the condition. Making the hunt for the right genetic trigger difficult is the notion that a number of genes may …
