Stem Cell Research

Researchers at Advanced Cell Technology has developed three new stem cell lines by taking an individual cell from an embryo and then froze the embryo with no harm done to it. ACT had generated a wave of criticism for its earlier announcement on the process. That work involved destroying the embryo to prove the theory that you could develop stem cell lines by withdrawing cells from an embryo. This new work saves the embryo to …

Stem cells take center stage in San Diego summit

The Stem Cell Summit wrapped up two days of discussions in San Diego with a focus on some of the therapies that are either already in use or close to it. There's already a small market to use stem cells to make synthetic discs for the spine, but a lineup of companies in the adult stem cell field--led by stem cells drawn from bone marrow, blood and fat--are pushing experimental …

New study to use stem cells after heart attacks

Doctors in the UK are preparing to begin a study to see whether injecting stem cells harvested from a patient's bone marrow can repair the damage on heart muscle inflicted by a heart attack. The injections will be given within five hours of a heart attack, a critical period in the eyes of investigators. Doctors will recruit 100 patients for the procedure, which will also include angioplasty to clear blocked arteries--a standard therapy in these cases. Earlier studies have demonstrated …

Breast cancer stem cells found in bone marrow

Richard J. Cote, professor of pathology and urology at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California, has completed a new study that demonstrates that virtually all of the tumor cells found in the bone marrow of early stage breast cancer victims appear to be breast cancer stem cells. "The primary implication is that it is the stem cell population in cancers that are presumed to be the only cells capable of forming metastases," said Cote. "Metastasis is the most …
