U.S. lawmakers aim for new stem cell law
The latest revelations on new sources of versatile adult stem cells like that found in amniotic fluid are likely to become a major bone of contention among conservative lawmakers lining up against a new Democratic initiative aimed at changing the restrictive policies of the federal government when it comes to underwriting stem cell research. The Dems want to make federal funding available to groups obtaining embryonic stem cells from fertility clinics that otherwise would have to dispose of them. A number of Republican lawmakers have already joined with the Democrats to pass similar legislation that ran head-on into a presidential veto. The key question for outside observers is if the proponents of the bill now have the votes to override a presidential veto, which is likely in the event any such legislation hits the president's desk.
