Statins could be linked to Parkinson's disease

A new study at the University of North Carolina indicates that statins could be linked to an increase risk of Parkinson's disease. Statins lower the level of 'bad' LDL cholesterols, which in turn was found among Parkinson's patients. Critics of the study have contended that with only 124 Parkinson's patients taking part, there wasn't enough data to confirm the link. And the researchers say they intend to test the results in a trial involving 16,000 patients. Parkinson's is characterized by the absence of dopamine-producing cells, resulting in tremors, stiffness and poor coordination.
